"Two years ago, I took the Oath of Office on stage at the Paramount Theater with my family and friends by my side. It’s been a rewarding journey with you since then, and we took some important steps forward to improve our city.
The challenges we face in city government and as a community are great, but I remain optimistic about Oakland’s future and our ability to solve these big problems together. We must make sure that all Oakland residents share in the benefits of our economic prosperity. We must expand our housing stock, create good-paying jobs, and pursue economic development without displacing current residents and disrupting our neighborhoods. We must protect the most vulnerable of our neighbors.
As we begin the second half of my term, I'd like to thank you for your abiding friendship and your dedicated service to Oakland. Whether it’s serving as a mentor in our public schools, as a neighborhood council leader, or if you joined us the past two years at one of our many neighborhood walks or volunteer activities to build new parks and clean up our streets, I deeply appreciate the opportunity to work with you to help make Oakland a better and more vibrant city for all our neighbors and small business.
Everyday, as your Councilmember, I get up ready to serve you with the goal of helping Oakland become a safer, more peaceful, innovative and vibrant community while sustaining our diversity that makes our city a great place to live, work and play.
I look forward to working with you in 2017!” - Abel
